Common Causes Of Low Vision Issues

In this article by Mountain Eye Care, we will be discussing some of the different causes in low vision development, and how our optometrists can help you catch the early signs of deterioration, so please keep reading to find out more, and you could be saving your vision in the process!
Age-Related Macular Degeneration
Macular degeneration is a disorder that affects a person’s retina, the light-sensitive lining located at the back of the eye that focuses images. The part of the retina that is responsible for sharp central vision, known as the macula, can deteriorate with age and cause blurred vision as a result. There are two forms of this degeneration, non-exudative and exudative, both are age-related, and are the leading cause of blindness in people over 50. The exact cause is still unknown, but modern science has asserted that although age is the primary contributing factor, smoking, genetics, and nutrition also have a significant effect on developing macular degeneration over time.
Diabetic Retinopathy
People with diabetes can be more susceptible to vision loss due to the effects of this disease on the body and the eyes. Diabetes can cause the blood vessels that nourish the retina to leak fluid in the eye, resulting in vision loss and possibly severe damage to the retina. Regulating blood sugar is the number one way to treat diabetic retinopathy, while laser procedures and surgical procedures can only reduce its progression.
Injury or Trauma
Whether you sustain eye trauma or trauma to the brain, these injuries can cause vision loss. Retinal detachment can be caused by eye trauma, infection, or development of a tumor, resulting in total vision impairment. If caught early, surgery can be used to reattach the retina and restore partial or full vision. Head injury, brain damage, or a stroke can also cause irreparable damage to your vision, so always wear protective headgear on bikes or motorcycles, and while playing contact sports.
